1,500 jobless if hard-drive maker closes Kuching plant

KUCHING: Hard-drive maker Western Digital Media (M) Sdn Bhd (formerly KOMAG USA) has confirmed that it is winding down its Sarawak plant by March.

Set up in 1973, Western Digital has four plants in Selangor, Penang, Johor and Sarawak with a total of 7,000 employees.

The shutdown of its plant in Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone here will leave some 1,500 workers jobless.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Department Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman criticised the move, saying Western Digital had not informed the state government of its decision to wind down operations here.

"As part of cost-cutting measures, Western Digital could have implemented year-end production shutdowns, shorter work weeks and longer annual leave to mitigate the possibility of retrenchment of their staff."
Upon learning of the closure in the media on Friday, Daud called for an emergency meeting with the company's management yesterday, which included Western Digital's human resource director from Penang, Saiful Bahri Sopar, and senior director from Sarawak, Keong Chan.

"It is sad that the decision was made drastically. The workers were not informed until Tuesday by the CEO in the US," said Daud.

He said he was also saddened that the plant here was chosen to be closed down.

"While the Kuching and Johor plants produce the same type of hard disks, why did Kuching become the subject of closure when it has more experienced staff compared with Johor?"

Daud said Western Digital should have considered the welfare of its workers.

"Although the workers were given the option of joining other plants in Johor or Selangor, most of the workers have to decline due to low salary, the higher cost of living in Peninsular Malaysia as well as family and other commitments here."

He said the state government would try to find job placements for the affected workers.

Haih... When this gonna end??
